Dutch Wind Power

Industrial Windmills, Colonial Conquests

This pictorial map reaches from the Netherlands to the wider world around 1700, showing the origin of raw resources – spices, timber, grains, and pigments – processed in Zaandam’s windmills and traded by Amsterdam merchants, during the Dutch golden-age. Icons and a still-life (bottom) capture the intensity of windmill developments and the variety goods produced using wind.
